Firms donate to cut maternal mortality

THE Steamships Group and Moore Printing companies have donated K100,000 to The Hands of Rescue Foundation (Thor) to help reduce the maternal mortality rate in Milne Bay and throughout the country.
The donation was presented to a Milne Bay-based non-profit organisation in Alotau last month.
Steamships general manager corporate affairs Vele Rupa said the company employed more than 600 women in its subsidiaries and thus recognised “the importance of safe motherhood.”
“If there is a way for us to help in a small way, we are incredibly pleased to do so,” he said.
Thor director Dr Barry Kirby said the donations would help the services to reach the outlying island communities in the province.
