First win in handball

 PAPUA New Guinea scored its first international handball victory on Tuesday, with a 20-15 win over the Cook Islands at the International Handball Federation Oceania Trophy in Wellington, New Zealand.

The Under-20 men’s team will play their final pool match against Samoa today.

The match is crucial for the first-timers, as they must win to avoid wooden spoon in their pool, which comprise Australia, Tahiti, Cook Island and Samoa. From three games, PNG has one win and two losses. 

They lost their first match to Australia 40-11 but bounced back to beat the Cook Island 20-15, before losing to Tahiti 36-15 yesterday.

 In the other pool, the undefeated New Caledonians remain on top followed by Vanuatu, New Zealand and American Samoa.

In PNG’s pool, Australia and Tahiti are likely to advance to the semi-finals against New Caledonia and New Zealand.
