The National Fisheries Authority signed a deal with the East New Britain government and Fuzian Zhonghong Fishery Company in Port Moresby on Friday for the establishment of a tuna longline fishing and processing facility in the province. Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Patrick Basa said the agreement does not contain obligations for any of the parties involved. Instead, he said it showed the commitments of the province and the uthority to work towards the establishment of a tuna longline fishing and processing facility in the province.
He said even though the project is smaller than the tuna canneries in the northern part of the country, it has the potential to become a reliable market for fresh chilled tuna and other fish species that are caught by local communities.
