PAPUA New Guinea University Sports Association secretary Cornelius Papau has been elected to the executive committee of the Oceania University Sports Association (Fisu Oceania).
Papau, who is also the manager of the PNG Sports Foundation’s (PNGSF) high performance division, said his election was a chance to expand opportunities for university students.
“It is wonderful to have PNG represented on the Fisu Oceania executive committee and I am honoured to be offered the opportunity,” he said.
“I hope to ensure that opportunities continue to be expanded for university students in PNG as well as contribute to the overall Fisu Oceania strategy.”
Fisu Oceania secretary-general Donna Spethman welcomed Papau’s election. “It was a natural fit to have Papau as part of our committee,” she said.
“The work that he has done over the past few years to reinstate intervarsity sporting competitions in PNG has seen a rise in student sport activities.
“This is what we want to see in Oceania countries — more university students engaging in sports.”
PNG University Sports Association president Harry Chapau congratulated Papau as he acknowledged PNGSF’s role in creating more awareness on sports at the university level.
Fisu Oceania is a member association of the International University Sports Federation.
