Flood affects students, elderly

THE elderly and students are the two main groups of people affected when Tuman River in Anglimp-South Waghi, Jiwaka, floods during the rainy season, a councillor says.
Peter Oiwe said he lost his mother who was swept away while trying to cross the river and was thankful for the construction of the new bridge.
The district development authority oversaw the delivery of equipment to the site on Monday.
“When people have access to good roads, bridges and electricity, it automatically changes people’s lives and improves their standard of living,” Oiwe said.
“More than 4,000 people will now access the new bridge once work is completed.”
Oiwe said work was underway on an electrification project and road upgrading in the district.
He said having power in the district would allow people to conduct business in their local level government areas instead of travelling out to access this service.
Another councillor Michael Dot said people were excited and relieved with the construction of the bridge.
He assured the DDA that the community would look after the workers and assist the contractor.
