Flood affects water supply in Madang

Flooding has further complicated Madang’s ongoing water problems, Water PNG Madang area manager Patrick Jinimbo said.
Jinimbo said water equipment was damaged during a riot by locals from Amele during a protest over the beheading of a primary school teacher from Bau Primary School.
Jinimbo said they managed to put a smaller version of the equipment on and keep the town going while they waited for the actual part to arrive.
However, heavy flooding took place over the last couple of weeks which forced sediments to block off the pump pressuring water to the purifying plant.
Jinimbo said the equipment that they had installed could not support the function of the old one
He said inmates from Beon were engaged to dive into the river to clear the equipment.
Hundreds of Madang town residents are struggling to find water each day.
Madang’s water problems have continued for the eighth week.
