RAINBOW Flyers have shocked the National Capital District Volleyball Association (NCDVA) front-runners Edatec Scorpions with 3-2 victory in the men’s A-grade match on Saturday.
The reigning champions didn’t see this coming as the spirited Flyers outfit caused a 15-13 upset on the final set at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Centre for their second win of the season in round six of the competition.
Flyers skipper Inos Rupa said the result came from a strong team effort, pointing defence as a key factor behind Saturday’s successful match.
“We knew we wouldn’t beat them in attack because they are one of the top teams in the competition,” Rupa said.
“Our plan was to play simple volleyball and defend throughout the entire game.
“We tried to win the first two sets but we only secured the first and third frame before going into the final set.”
The mobs from Rainbow who are yet to secure a permanent coach knew Scorpions would be hard in attack and worked to cut them off on the net before hitting the court.
Flyers game plan played out well in the opener when they secured the match with 25-21 scoreline.
The A-grade champions were stunned in the first set but recovered in the second through hitters Joseph Patrick, Kala Walo, William Alu and Repa Gima.
The match germinated excitement as the underdogs locked the third frame comfortably to place them into the fifth set after Scorpions scooped the fourth frame.
With both teams winning two sets each, the match was sent into a 15-point decider. Flyers remained calm and put up concrete walls against the Scorpions hitters, which put them ahead 7-5.
The Inos Rupa-captained side maintained the 2-point lead with fine touches on court cover and blocks as Scorpions tried to pounce on their attack. Flyers held on until the final play, finishing with a 15-13 victory.
“I’m happy to get the win especially against the number one team in NCDVA,” vice-captain George Iorive said after the game.
“This will set us for our next game.”
