FORMER Kumul and Hull Kingston Rovers legend Stanley Gene has been handed coaching and community engagement roles on his return to the English Super League club early this year.
Born in Goroka, the 46-year-old made his name with the Rovers between 1996 and 2000 after his move from Papua New Guinea.
He then went on to play for Hull, Huddersfield Giants and Bradford Bulls.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and I want to thank coach Tony Smith who is one of the finest coach I’ve known,” Gene told The National yesterday from the United Kingdom.
“I was brought in just after the season started and my role covers assistant coaching in the first-grade team, reserve grade, community and school engagements.
“Sometimes I work with sponsors and also helping getting kits ready for game day.
“It’s been awesome to get back to what I love doing and what better way than to come back and work with the club that I call home and where it all began for me.
“It’s been an eye opener for me for the first few months working under Tony and the amount of things I learn as a coach is priceless.
