FORMER PNG Kumul forward Nande Yer passed away at the Port Moresby General Hospital after a heart attack on Saturday.
Yer is survived by wife Bida and three children Brownwin, Norberta and Makena Yer.
From Ialibu in Southern Highlands, the 42-year-old had an illustrious and a nomadic rugby league career which took him around the country and the world.
Elder brother Peter Yer told The National yesterday that he was shocked about the news of his younger brother’s death.
“Yer was one of the longest serving Kumul – from 1992-1997.
He was very influential among the young kids in his playing days as an SP Cup Inter City player and PNG Kumul,” he said.
Cousin and teammate Raymond Karl
described late Yer’s death a great loss to rugby league.
Karl said he was a very disciplined, strong and hard working forward.
“We started together with Lae Bombers and he was the first to join the Kumul ranks. I joined him at 1994,” he said.
Yer was nominated in the PNG Legends team to play visiting Australian Kangaroo legends last month.
Unfortunately he did not take the field due to his illness.
Former teammates, colleagues, fans and families who want to pay their last respect are advised to visit the haus krai located at Manu Autoport.
