Found guilty of manslaughter

THE Waigani National Court has convicted a lawyer for causing the death of his wife at their home in Port Moresby in 2016.
Justice Teresa Berrigan on Friday found Felix Kange, 42, from Maia village in Pangia, Southern Highlands, guilty of the manslaughter of his wife Regina Morove at their Garden Hills home in Port Moresby.
The incident occurred inside the couple’s home on May 14, 2016 when he shot her with a firearm.
Justice Berrigan upheld evidence from the State lawyers after a trial.
Kange, through his lawyers, had told the Court that he had accidently discharged his firearm.
However, Justice Berrigan said there was criminal negligence on the part of the defendant in handling the firearm.
Justice Berrigan said she was satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt to convict Kange for manslaughter.
Kange’s lawyers have applied for a pre-sentence report and the matter to be prepared by the probation services.
Kange’s bail was extended after Justice Berrigan refused the State’s objections to bail.
The matter returns to court on Oct 2 for submissions on sentence.

  • Very interesting ! A dangerous weapon was involved and a conviction on manslaughter sounds very funny. If it’s accidental , then it obviously amounts to a criminal negligence of the worst kind by a learnt professional lawyer , hence , the conviction should have been a murder. A very bad case president which doesn’t serve the purpose of justice.

  • Often hear of Magistrates throwing out case because taken too long to prosecute.
Wonder why did this one take four years?

  • A gun/pistol is not a fun thing or a toy to play with. A precious life has been taken. Why trying to give excuses? Is we are truly sorry then we are to accept the penalty/reward for our very own actions.
