Foundation helps school with building

THE 114 students of Aekeiko Elementary School at Irugl in the Kundiawa-Gembogl District, Chimbu, have a new double classroom funded by Digicel Foundation.
Aekeiko may be the only boarding elementary school in the country and looks after 30-40 orphaned children and children whose homes are far away from the school.
The double classroom comes with a 5000 litre water tank, two ventilation improved ablution units, and a teacher’s office space, accessorised with blackboards and desks for 80 students, all powered by solar power installations.
The school started off as a home for orphaned children and later developed into a community learning centre before becoming an elementary school in 2009.
Head teacher, Gertrud Tine, said she was glad for this funding, adding that their school was self-sustained and relied heavily on charity organisations to maintain its running.
“Sometimes we don’t want to feed these children but then we are reminded of our Christian duty which strengthens us to do what we do,” Tine said.
