OIL Search Foundation in partnership with The Voice, Tari Secondary and Kikori Secondary schools conducted a leadership training programme for students at the two schools.
Foundation executive director Stephanie Copus-Campbell said the training was an important part of equipping the youths with essential leadership skills to make a difference in their home and community.
“Being proactive in developing PNG’s youth to drive positive change for their communities and nation is a priority for Oil Search Foundation,” Copus-Campbell said.
The programme was piloted at Kikori Secondary in Gulf last year and extended to Tari Secondary this year, with more than 120 grade 12 students attending.
Training was conducted over three days, students were trained on understanding leadership and drive, the importance of relationship and how it could affect leadership, the value of learning from experience and the importance of attitudes and capabilities.
After training students were given group assignments to demonstrate what they had learnt.
Grade 12 student from Kikori Seconday Dickson Hevara said the training made him realise there was a real purpose for life and how he could best fulfil that purpose.
Tari Secondary grade 12 teacher Justina Yarra said: “It was good to see students interested.
“We learnt some values, behaviours and tactics that we can utilise to help build these young people.”
