Four codes receive funding

ATHLETICS, basketball, boxing and Va’a have become the first four sports to be allocated funding from Team Papua New Guinea’s performance strategy under the PNG Olympic Committee.
The committee said in a statement that the initial funding was to provide support for national federations to stage their national domestic competitions and support their selection processes for representative duties. Funding was made possible through Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited’s sponsorship this year.
Committee secretary-general Auvita Rapilla commended the four sports for being organised and compliant by providing all the required documentations and information as part of their resource allocation policy.
“Preparations at the elite level are a continued effort and we are grateful that this partnership will enable us to assist athletes to bring success to the country and inspire more Papua New Guineans to pursue their dreams,” she said.
“We encourage all other sports to submit their performance plans, budgets and selection criteria, so our athletes can get the required support and preparations for the upcoming Games.
“The challenges of the Coronavirus are ongoing and we encourage federations to improvise and prepare their athletes and teams the best they can under the current circumstances.”
Athletics PNG was one of the federations to receive the funding support that saw them stage their Grand Prix last weekend followed by this weekend’s national championships in Kimbe, West New Britain. “For athletics, the assistance is very timely as it has helped Athletics PNG with travel and accommodation costs at a time when they were struggling to ensure that all their key athletes made it over to Kimbe,” federation president Tony Green said.
“Toea Wisil, Daniel Baul, Adrine Monagi, Lakona Gerega and Jackie Travertz are some of the athletes being funded to travel to Kimbe this week for the championships.”
