Four policemen jailed, eight under investigation

FOUR policemen have been jailed for between two to seven years for various crimes they committed.
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said the four were from the 12 arrested so far under the new “Policing the Police” initiative.
The remaining eight are still under investigation.
He said two police officers were convicted for assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. One will serve six years and the other seven years in jail.
The third officer convicted of assault will serve two years. Another found guilty of official corruption and helping a prisoner escape will serve four years.
N’dranou said there was an increase in the number of police officers failing to uphold the law and tarnishing the image of the constabulary. He said the law itself was an alternative to improving police image and ultimately address crime in the capital city.
“Let me warn all police officers at the NCD Command, police headquarters, police band, police college, dog directorate, water police and Central police to refrain from involving in illegal activities and ill behaviour,” N’dranou said.
The officer in charge of minor crimes at the Gordon police station, Appolos Terry, said the list of officers being investigated kept on growing.
“The list keeps getting bigger and bigger every day. This not a witch-hunt but the hierarchy has seen discipline eroding over the years,” Terry said.
“The issue needs to be addressed.”
