VICE-CAPTAIN Joe Frank bagged a double to help Rabaul Gurias overcome Enga Mioks 20-12 in round 12 of the Digicel Cup at the Kalabond Oval, Kokopo, East New Britain, on Saturday.
The Mioks wasted little time when winger Joel William crossed over for the visitors’ first try to lead 6-0.
But the Francis Ray-coached Gurias responded with a slick backline move which saw centre Frank scoring his first try of the afternoon, but five-eighth Saki Peter missed the conversion to trail 4-6 at halftime.
After the break, poor defence from the Mioks paved the way for Peter to score a converted try and help the Gurias to a 10-6 lead.
The Agmark-sponsored hosts continued the momentum which saw Nathan Tente provide a short ball to prop Isaac Patrick to score under the uprights and Peter added the extras for a 16-6.
It was not yet over for the visitors as experienced hooker Stanley Olo produced a long pass to William to score his second converted try.
But the Gurias made sure of the win through Frank’s second try.
Ray said he was relieved to get the win despite a number of questionable refereeing calls.
Meanwhile, Mioks coach Billy Gau said they would now turn their focus to this weekend’s clash with Hela Wigmen in Port Moresby.
