FACEBOOK can now be accessed free of charge by Digicel customers, managing director for mobile business Shivan Bhargava says.
He said this following the launching of the free option on Tuesday.
The option to free Facebook mode is accessible through Facebook applications, or on Facebook.com only when one is attached to the Digicel network.
Bhargava said this new Facebook offering would allow smartphone users to browse Facebook messages, comment, share, like or tag someone and even send photos via Facebook messenger at no cost.
“It is something new that has happened in the South Pacific and for the first time we have launched something like this,” he said.
“It is applicable only for Digicel in PNG.
“If you look at the statistics world over, the largest social media site is Facebook.
“Facebook has 1.6 billion customers.
“The world over, social media penetration is approximately 56 per cent. In PNG, the figure is very, very low.
“The world is now dependent on data penetration.
“One of the biggest sources of data penetration is Facebook.
“It’s a simple product. It’s only when you want to go and see pictures and videos, only for that instance, during that period, you will consume data. Our objective is to make the lives of everyone connected.” Head of product Paul Byrne said Digicel wanted to bring social media to everyone in PNG.
“We want to get people to use it, understand it and make it accessible to them,” he said.
“We have worked very, very closely with Facebook to have this service.
“We see this as a stepping stone to people using social media.”
