A NEW Family Sexual Violence (FSV) Unit office costing more than K200,000 to build was opened in Minj last week to serve victims of domestic violence, police say.
Jiwaka police commander Insp Gideon Kauke said in the past reports of domestic violence laid at police stations were overlooked by policemen because they had no office to specifically address that matter and focused on major criminal cases.
Kauke said FSV unit in the station could now serve victims or survivors of domestic abuse with police officers running the unit.
Construction of the unit funded by the Australian government started in 2018 and finished last year.
He said Constable Daisi Tamugo had been appointed as the officer-in-charge (OIC) of the unit after acting in the position for the last two years.
“I have appointed her (Tamugo) because she has experience and can take ownership and responsibly run it (FSV unit),” he said.
Kauke said the unit would serve South Waghi and Anglimp districts in Jiwaka.
He said victims could now go to the FSV unit and get help including counselling and advice for their problems.
