SP Hunters rake Silas Gahuna made a try-scoring debut for the Gurias in their 38-2 win over Gulf Isou in round two of the Digicel Cup in Port Moresby on Sunday.
The win ensured the Gurias maintain their perfect start to the season after a 30-10 round-one win over the Mt Hagen Eagles at Sir John Guise Stadium.
Isou opened the scoring five minutes in through halfback Yunny Patrick with a penalty goal. But it was their only score of the match as the Gurias hit back with tries through Eliakim Lukara and Tuvi Lepan for a 10-2 lead at halftime.
The Gurias opened the floodgates in the second half with five unanswered tries as halves Allan Simbiri and Watson Boas coordinated their attack.
Gurias substitute Stanley Olo’s touch of brilliance from dummy-half would saw him score a try in the 41st minute.
Gurias fullback Terry Wapi crossed over five minutes later off a Boas kick.
Simbiri sent Muka Kalu Peter over for a try and Gahuna added another four-pointer for a 32-2 lead in the 60th minute.
Wapi grabbed his second try right on fulltime with the fullback slicing the defence to score under the uprights.
“It’s obviously a big win for the boys,” Gurias co-coach Marcus Kaugla said.
“It’s Gahuna’s first game for us and his inclusion further boosted our attack.
“The boys started off on the wrong foot with lots of incomplete sets and dropped balls.
“But we addressed that during halftime before coming out and executing our game plan well in the second stanza.”
