UPCOMING Queensland Intrust Super Cup (ISC) player and Redcliffe Dolphins five-eighth Patrick Gallen says he is focused on his short-term goals but is hoping to play for the Kumuls in the future. The 22-year-old’s dad is from Cairns, Australia, and mum is from the Bugail and Nonopai villages of New Ireland. Gallen, who made his ISC debut in 2019 with his home team, Northern Pride, told The National last week that he was inspired by former Queensland and Australian representative Jonathan Thurston to play rugby league.“I played five ISC games before I joined the Dolphins this year,” the Babinda Colts junior said. “I’ve already played two games so far with Redcliffe this season and I am really excited to be here. “I started playing rugby league when I was only seven years old. “At a young age, I didn’t really have a goal to play at the highest level as I just loved the game.“My inspiration was Thurston. “But my goal now is to play at highest level if I can. “I love the Kumuls and I’d like to play for them one day.” Gallen is coached by former National Rugby League players Justin Hodges, Adam Mogg and Scott Hill at Redcliffe. He said he usually travelled home to Papua New Guinea, however, Covid-19 had made it impossible to visit his mother’s place in recent times. “I miss it,” Gallen said. “I wish to return soon once Covid-19 is under control.” Meanwhile, he said he didn’t get to play in the Dolphins’ round-eight win over the SP Hunters late last month. “But I played against them with the Pride,” Gallen said.  “I always enjoy the challenge. They are very passionate players and that’s something I admire.”
