AN eight-ball singles pool tournament that attracted 16 players ended on Saturday with Dr Joseph Garap beating Bernard Vevera 4-1 in the final to bag his first title at Aviat Club in Lae, Morobe.
The best-of-seven final saw Garap bagging the first frame and then continued the momentum in the second for a 2-0 lead.
But Vevera turned the tables on Garap as he took control of the third frame to trail 1-2.
Both players were solid in the fourth and fifth frames, but luck was on Garap’s side as he claimed both frames to win the Christmas challenge 4-1.
“It’s very challenging,” Garap said.
“The thing about snooker is, you don’t take chances, but play safe.
“We like to take chances in social games.
“But when it comes to a tournament, don’t take chances.
“However, at times, you have to take calculated risks.
“When it works out, it’s a beautiful feeling.
“I’ve faced good opponents, but I stick to the basics, play simple and make the most of my opportunities.
“It’s the first time that I’ve won a snooker tournament here, so I’m excited about the victory.”
Vevera, who reached the final after he beat Lisa Clark, told The National that it was a tight match.
“This is my first final in the tournament,” he said.
“I lost but it’s all good.
“I’m now looking forward to competing in any singles tournaments.”
