Gardens destroyed in weekend storm

HEAVY rain over the weekend washed away gardens and blocked villagers from accessing basic services.
“Only few men and boys are getting out of their villages and having access to roads and other services” Nick Bobby, a local from Central told The National.
“I floated on a log to get to the main road.”
People living in the Vanapa-Brown area along the Hiritano Highway, in Central, have been cut off from the main roads since Friday.
Bobby said the difficulty was caused by rivers like Vanapa, Vaikabu and Brown bursting their banks and causing flooding.
The heavy downpour started on Friday and continued to Sunday.
In Vabi village two houses were washed away and about 300 people were left without gardens, Bobby said.
New gardens and newly planted crops are the most damaged.
School children were kept from going school until parents felt it was again safe to do so, he said.
