HETRA Gata slotted a penalty goal to help Woodman beat 54 Bears 12-10 in round four of the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition on Sunday.
Two minutes from fulltime and with the scores locked at 10-10, 54 Bears conceded a penalty over an illegal tackle and Gata made no mistake with his penalty shot at the Kone Tigers Oval.
Both packs showed a lot of intent in attack and defence in the early stages of the match before Woodman halfback Tom Toma opened the scoring with a penalty goal for a 2-0 lead.
Bears replied through Marcus Pepena for a 4-2 lead, but Woodman responded through an unconverted try by skipper Walter Mirupasi.
After several attacking raids, Bears were rewarded through a try by Temai John and hooker Charlie Manu added the extras for a 10-6 lead at halftime. In the second half, both sides were desperate to score more points, but their efforts were denied by silly errors for 20 minutes.
Ten minutes from fulltime, Woodman equalised through a try by Gata and the lead was there for the taking, but Toma failed to add the extras from an easy angle.
However, Gata saved Toma’s blushes when he stepped up and calmly slotted the winning penalty goal.
