MADANG’S Mad Gauns claimed the Madang Duban Sevens title on Saturday beating the Lae Harlequins 10-7 at Madang’s Ron Albert Oval.

The first half of the thrilling cup match saw both rivals struggle at scoring points.

Harlequins were on fire from the beginning of the first half but Sigma Construction-sponsored home side kept Lae out with some desperate scrambling defence on several occasions.

PNG representative Tobby Toally broke the deadlock taking advantage of a quick tap from a penalty to put the Mad Gauns in front 5-0 at halftime.

In the second half, Mad Gauns speedster Robert Waing split a tiring Harlequins defence to put Madang 10 points clear.

Harlequins responded in the 15th minute with a determined effort to get within three points at 10-7 but Madang managed to keep out Lae’s attack.

The 2013 Madang Duban 7s champions took home K10,000 while runners-up, Lae claimed K5,000.

In the bowl final, the Mendi Development Squad defeated the Goroka Mariners 20-7 while Pacific MMI Kimbe Rebels hammered Lae Royals 31-17 to claim plate.
