PRIME Minister James Marape says the concluded General Election 2022 (GE22) will be audited.
“GE22 presented many challenges that require substantial electoral reforms,” he said.
“Maintaining the status quo (of conducting GEs) is no longer an option. That is why, the Government has committed to conducting an audit for GE22.”
Marape said much could be learnt from domestic and international electoral observer teams.
“And we must build a strong governance and oversight arrangements for the Electoral Commission,” he said.
“We must also find a way of updating our common roll and build a strong identification system.
“We will also reform our electoral processes to ensure that one citizen gets one vote.
“We must aspire to give an improved electoral system as a gift to the nation, on the 50th Anniversary of our Independence.”
Police have begun investigating GE22-related violence.
Deputy police commissioner operations Donald Yamasombi said a team of 40 investigators had started conducting investigations.
“Not all GE22-related violence is criminal in nature at this stage,” he said.
“We will only attend to matters under the Criminal Code and not matters subject to another court.”
