Gerehu General Hospital will soon be upgraded to level five, Health and HIV/AIDS Minister Sir Puka Temu says.
He said a case study was done and two options were being considered and one was to elevate the hospital to level five.
“I inspected the hospital last week and so we will be able to upgrade the current status to a proper level five to service the big population in the city,” Sir Puka said. “A proper hospital discussion will continue through the budget process.
“In the absence of Central hospital and Port Moresby being the national referral hospital, I’m now going to give a lot of attention to Gerehu.”
Sir Puka said Gerehu and Port Moresby General Hospital were being suffocated by patients being referred from all over the country.
“My focus will be on Gerehu to upgrade it,” he said. “We’ve got the staff there and the land in the current area and I can tell you that the management of Gerehu hospital is very good.
“Compared to the complaints that Port Moresby has shortage of supplies, they always managed their supplies well.”
