IT stinks, says Port Moresby’s Gerehu resident Linda Soranzi as she surveys the rubbish in front of her home.
She said the pile had been growing since rubbish collectors stopped removing rubbish at Gerehu 3A four weeks ago.
“There are bad smells coming from the rubbish left here,” Soranzi said.
Another resident said they had been burning plastics, leaves, cardboard and wood but were finding it hard to dispose of tins, bottles and other metal objects.
“The collectors should come and remove the rubbish. We are rate payers and we deserve better than this.”
Locals had complained that things like diapers and condoms were scattered by dogs all over the streets and in front of homes.
City managers, NCDC, said yesterday they were aware of the suburb’s dilemma.
An NCDC officer said that the contractor responsible for collecting rubbish there had been avoiding authorities.
“The contractor has been on full pay to remove rubbish but has never done any work.”
The officer said rubbish in parts of Gerehu, Rainbow, NRI, UPNG, Ensisi Valley and Waigani had not been removed and that top management would be asked to review the contracts of those given the job.
