NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop says Port Moresby residents must get used to living in apartments because of increased population and urbanisation.
“We do not have enough land in the city,” he said.
Parkop made the remarks during a press conference in Port Moresby last week after signing an agreement in Fiji with the International Finance Corporation to provide affordable, green and climate-resilient housing in the Saraga area of 6-Mile, Port Moresby.
“Our population growth rate in PNG is 3.1 per cent,” he said.
“In Port Moresby now, we have almost one million people, the rate of migration into the city is about 10 per cent, so that makes it very hard for me as governor but I am not going to shy away from this challenge.”
According to government statistics, over 45 per cent or 370,000 residents in Port Moresby lived in settlements without land titles or access to basic infrastructure, such as water, sanitation and power.
