SOUTHERN Highlands Governor William Powi has urged his people to get vaccinated in order to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the province.
Powi said the provincial health authority had put in place a Covid-19 response framework but the people needed to play their part.
“Four weeks ago, I got the Johnson and Johnson vaccine and I’m fine, so I urge the people of Southern Highlands to get vaccinated,” he said.
“This vaccine was developed by experts and it is just like other vaccines and medicine that we’ve been taking.
“There is no reason to doubt the vaccine and believe the scare tactics on social media.”
Powi said there would be a Covid-19 awareness and vaccination drive in the province as part of the plan to contain the spread of the virus.
“Awareness is going to be a key part of our Covid-19 response plan and there will be subsequent funding to carry out awareness in the province,” he said.
“I will be part of the awareness drive, so as a leader, I’ve set an example for my people and got vaccinated.
“I am advising my provincial executive council and the 600,000 people of Southern Highlands to get vaccinated.
“The vaccine is not a cure (for ( the Covid-19), but it helps protect you so the virus won’t kill you; it adds some layer of protection.
“I am not forcing anyone to get vaccinated, but it is in your best interest.
“I am urging my people to do their part; if you show symptoms like a cough or have the flu, try and stay away from other people as you might infect your family members and other people in the community.
“Everybody has a part to play in this issue.”
Meanwhile, Powi said a tripartite agreement was signed between Prime Minister James Marape, Health Minister Jelta Wong and the Southern Highlands government.
“This agreement is to ensure that we work together to ensure that the Covid-19 situation in Southern Highlands is dealt with urgently,” he explained.
