GOVERNOR-General Sir Michael Ogio was flown to Brisbane, Australia, last Friday for specialist medical treatment.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill has requested people in Papua New Guinea and the Pacific to offer their prayers for Sir Michael.
A statement from O’Neill’s office said Sir Michael’s condition “is currently listed as critical”.
“I ask that our people pray for the Grand Chief, Sir Michael Ogio, and his family at this concerning time,” he said.
“Our governor-general is truly an outstanding leader in our nation, and we pray for positive news from his family.”
Sir Michael was taken to the Pacific International Hospital in Port Moresby last Wednesday and underwent regular medical checks.
But his condition deteriorated and he was admitted at the hospital’s intensive care unit.
He was administered blood transfusion to stabilise his condition.
He had undergone a coronary heart bypass surgery last November.
A statement from Sir Michael’s office said he had developed serious complications that warranted “urgent medical treatment that is not available in the country”.
Sir Michael’s office “acknowledges the timely intervention of Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to enable the governor-general to travel to Australia for emergency treatment”.
He resumed official duties early this year following last November’s bypass surgery, and had been undergoing regular medical checks.
