ADMIRAL Thisara Samarasinghe is the first High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Papua New Guinea.

He met Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio at Government House yesterday who welcomed him to the country.

“The people of Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka have established good cordial relations since 1992 for which we are grateful,” he said.

“The friendly relations have continued. The extent of our bilateral relations may not be as significant as with other countries in the Asian region (but) it still remains important to us.

“High level visits are an essential part of maintaining the cordial relations between our two countries.

“I wish to encourage and urge both countries to increase exchange of visits both at political and official level to forge and deepen our bilateral relations.

“I wish to assure you that the government of Papua New Guinea stands ready to render all support and assistance you may require in executing your tasks during your tour of duty.

Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe said Sri Lanka was heading in a new direction and enjoying peace.

“We seek Papua New Guinea’s support and contribution in continuing the people to people relationship,” he said.
