JULIA Gillard wrapped up her visit to PNG on Saturday with a visit to the Bomana War Cemetery outside Port Moresby.

She laid a wreath in the cemetery.

At Bomana, the largest cemetery for Commonwealth war dead in the world, Gillard visited the graves of Victoria Cross winners John French and Ben Kingsbury.

She also visited the grave of airforce nurse Sister Marie Craig, the only woman buried among 3,800 at Bomana, who died in a plane crash in West Papua two weeks after the war ended.

“I’m very pleased that I could come here today and pay my respects and the respects of the Australian nation to those who sacrificed so much,” she told reporters.
