A K250 prize money from The National’s Masthead competition couldn’t have been better timed for 10-year-old Abbeygale Rutana.
She will buy stationery for herself and her sister Addaeyrah, seven, as both are need of replenishing their stock.
The Bougainville sisters attend Nonu Primary School in Port Moresby.
Abbeygale is in grade four and Addeyrah in grade two.
“We love reading The National because it has a lot of activities for us children,” Abbeygale said.
Abbeygale’s father David Rutana Jr thanked the newspaper for allowing students to participate in the competition.
Another winner, Vegua Heina, 63, from Rigo, Central, was thankful to have won K250 as well and now he wouldn’t feel so bad for not buying his grandson a smart phone.
He said his grandson Eugene Vegua, who is a grade seven student at Gaire Primary School, had asked him for a smart phone.
“I turned him away and felt bad about that,” Heina said.
“I then thought of trying this competition.
“This was my first try and I got lucky.
“I can now buy a smartphone for Eugene.”
Meanwhile, Frank Avea, 48, from Gulf was also a winner in his favourite daily.
Avea said he would use the money to find a part-time job since he had resigned from his previous one.
“I will use the money to do my applications and then buy data to send applications via email,” he said.
Avea said the rest would be kept in his bank account for use later.
