THE K34 million redevelopment of Girua airport will completely change the image of Northern, according to National Airport Corporation acting managing director and chief executive officer Joseph Tupiri.

He told The National that new facilities to be built would give the airport a big facelift.

The feasibility study was conducted in 2013 to redevelop the airport facilities.

The project is being carried out by the China Harbour Engineering Company.

“The feasibility study is in the form of social safeguards assessments (environmental and social impact assessments), financial and economic analysis, and engineering investigations, design and documentation,” he said.

The project is jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank and the Government.

ADB contributes 78 per cent or K26.52 million and the Government provides K7.48 million.

“NAC has been driving the project and progress on landowners issues have been realised through stakeholders consultations between NAC, the provincial government/administration and landowners,” Tupiri said.

The project is likely to take 15 months to complete.

Deputy general manager Fu XIUQuan said the China Harbour Engineering Company (PNG) Limited started upgrading the airport in April.

“The main work of the project includes strengthening the existing 1675 meters runway, constructing the 5669 meters security fence, constructing a new terminal building, a  power house, a  public toilet,  a market, a market toilet, an engineer’s  office and the new car park.”
