PRIME Minister James Marape has challenged Team Papua New Guinea to give their best at the Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, which start on Sunday and end on July 20.
“Your nation expects the best from you,” he told the contingent at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby last night.
“Just give your best for your country.
“When you wear the PNG uniform, you forget your various differences and you come in as one national citizen trying to do the best for your country.
“Your predecessors have done the best for their country and they’ve moved on.
“You are now trying to do your best for your country.”
Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee president Sir John Dawanicura, in his farewell address to Team PNG, reminded athletes and officials to be good ambassadors of the country.
“It’s your time to shine in Apia, time to shine again,” he said.
“Be great ambassadors of PNG on and off the field.
“Sportsmanship has to shine for us.
“Win lose or draw, we have to accept the decision. Our challenge is to repeat (our 2015 performance) within whatever resources we have and at the end of the day, it’s the athletes who need to shine.
“Do your best, that’s all we ask.
“You carry with you not only your dreams, but the dreams of your families and community.
“You also carry the dreams of the nation.”
Sir John described the last Pacific Games in Port Moresby as one of the most successful Games and he has set the challenge for athletes to repeat their 2015 table-topping performance in Apia.
