Goi proposes only women contest LLG presidency

ONLY women will be allowed to contest the presidents seats from the next local level government elections, if Minister for Community Development Women, Youth and Religion Wake Goi will have anything to do with it.
From there they will proceed to elect a deputy governor – one each from Mamose, New Guinea Islands and Southern and two from the Highlands region – who will be guaranteed a seat in parliament.
This way women will have five seats at least in parliament for a start in a move to encourage women’s involvement in government, Goi said.
The minister intends to take his proposals to parliament so they become law.
He said it would give women the chance to be elected into parliament.
During the local level government elections, men will be allowed to contest only the ward council seats while women will contest the seats for presidents and then proceed to elect a deputy governor.
Goi said women would also elect ward councillors.
It was suggested previously to reserve 25 seats for women in parliament. But it failed to get support.
“I’m trying to make this come into effect in the 2022 elections.”

  • No need to add parliamentarians. Just amend laws to arrest MP’s for stealing public funds so that will hinder them so they can deliver services

  • Is that the most brilliant idea you have in your term, Mr Minister?
It will simply not work. This is democratic country and you have no right to dictate who should contest what seat.

  • What a joke! It doesn’t make any difference. We had female leaders in our last election but what happened? Just amend laws to severely punish our MP’s for corruption.
