FORMER SP Hunter Jeffrey Robert and his new club on the Gold Coast have donated sets of playing kits to his local team in Unggai, Eastern Highlands.
The 22-year-old, who recently signed a one-year contract with Helensvale Hornets, told The National on Monday that he wanted to give something back to his village team, Nui Wamo Tigers.
Robert said he had arranged for the Hornets to donate the jerseys when he was with the South Pacific Brewery-sponsored Hunters last year.
The Masuma villager played for Hornets in the Gold Coast Rugby League as an affiliated player from the Hunters.
“At the end of the Hoplus Cup season last year, I asked the Hornets to help my local team back home with jerseys and they agreed to help,” the 2020 Digicel Cup premiership winner said.
“In December, we received one full set of jerseys and three sets of workout shirts from the Hornets.
“I am proud to help my local team.
“I was excited when the players put on their jerseys to play in the Unggai league. I would like to thank the management of Hornets for helping my team.
“I’ve always wanted to give back in some way to my community and the donation of jerseys may be small, but it makes me feel good to at least give something back.”
Robert urged youths in his community to remain disciplined.
He said rugby league was one of the ways in which youths could keep themselves fit and stay away from bad habits.
Meanwhile, Robert said he was proud of the performance of his Nui Wamo Tigers.
“So far, the team have won six-straight games after receiving the jerseys,” he said.
“I think the jerseys may have given them a boost.”
