BUTTERFLIES say they are grateful to Goldie, Laloki and Erima women for agreeing to form their women’s team in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) competition.
In their debut match on Sunday, Butterflies went down to Dobo Warriors 0-24. Most of the women compete in the Vanapa-Brown Rugby League competition, and are determined to make their presence felt in the city’s premier rugby league competition.
Despite the loss, Butterflies head coach Michael Boeo thanked the women for their courage and determination. He said they had come out of their comfort zone to test themselves in the city competition, “so we must support them”.
POMRFL operations manager Meke Maino encouraged the women to train harder to prepare their bodies and mindsets before the games.
He said this was to avoid injuries, so they could go back to their homes injury-free to fulfil their responsibilities as women.
Maino discouraged the women from chewing betelnut and smoking as it hindered their athletic abilities.
