NATIONAL Capital District Commission and NCD reserve police will close down betel nut stalls at Gordon market today to start work on the “safer cities for women and girls” project.

Governor Powes Parkop affirmed his position on providing a safer and convenient market place for women and the general public at a media conference yesterday.

Powes said improving market facilities and security at Gordon market was the second phase of the project by UN Women and NCDC that was launched last year with its pilot project being the Gerehu market.

“There’s no place to relocate the vendors when the work commences, they will probably set up outside the market,” he said.

“The safer cities for women and girls project include a physical redesign of the market facilities to cater for vendors and also to improve security for our women, girls, tourists and the general public.

“During this Easter period, NCDC with NCD reserve police, will beef up security within and around the market, and I warn those who are involved in the petty crimes that action will be taken.

“In my term and in the period of the project, I want to change Gordon market and make it a safer place to go because it has been termed a notorious zone for the petty crimes.”
