THE school of education within the University of Goroka has been boosted with K50,000 to host the National Education Conference in September next year.
School dean Dr James Aiwa, in appreciation of the commitment by the top management team, said organising conferences was important because research and publication were lacking at the university.
“Actual research must be done,” he said.
“Data must be collected and stored. Data must be translated into information and provided to users.
“That’s why we have research centres in the university. Research centres are platforms that are available for all.
“Data collected must be disseminated using technology through conference hosting, publishing journals and the like.”
Acting Vice-Chancellor Donald Gumbis, when making the undertaking to give K50,000 as seed funding towards the conference, said: “We always progress from the known to the unknown.
“What we know, we must publish so it becomes known.
“Conferences happen when an activity happens that forces them to happen. We are now going through changes in education.
“It is timely that we will be hosting yet another conference.
“This signifies our learning and teaching as well as community obligation.
“From there we will note what the key challenges to work on are.
“The first challenge is to keep up with our millennium developmental goals.
“Since 2000 the international community has realised we have a recurrent of some of the challenges that humanity is being faced with.
“Last year we had 17 millennium developmental goals that were formulated. Number four refers to quality education.
“This theme of the conference should also entail this particular goal.”
