THE Government through the Papua New Guinea Sports Foundation on Thursday launched a national sports policy for 2020-2050 to set the framework for development.
Prime Minister James Marape said the fourth edition of the policy was approved by the national executive council in July and would serve as a tool in developing the country.
“When we took office, we didn’t leave this policy on the side,” he said.
“We decided to park it with the Higher Education Ministry on the basis that it should be seen not just for leisure, fun and recreation, but more importantly as viable career option for those who choose this pathway.
“Our minds must be thinking of sports as an alternative for youths to find an active meaning in life and for them to make their own progress in life.”
Marape said the policy was focused on development with plans to integrate and strengthen sporting activities and programmes in schools and communities.
Meanwhile, Sports Minister Wesley Raminai said the policy was mainly focused on developing sports at the grassroots level which would make a difference in the international scene.
“PNG is the biggest island in the Pacific and we should easily walk over other Pacific Island countries,” he said.
“But why do we struggle to win medals in sports?
“We shouldn’t be struggling and that’s the reason we’re so excited for this policy to come out.
“We need to work hard and invest more in children.”
