Government to take lead in campaign to end violence: Bais

National

THE Government will be taking the lead in a national campaign to end violence in the country next month, according to Community Development secretary Anna Bais.
Bais said the campaign which would call for men to unite and stand up against all forms of violence affecting families and communities would start on Nov 16.
“Churches, partners and stakeholders will support us to stand together to end violence in families and communities,” she said.
Bais urged men to take up the challenge of becoming agents of change in their homes and in the community as a response to addressing violence against the vulnerable.
“Men have to stand up and take lead role in ending violence in our country,” she said. “All the women and families are going to support the men in this campaign.”
“We cannot wait for others to (intervene and address our) problems. We have to stand together to end all forms of violence.”

  • Involve key Government and non-government agencies who are working very closely with people in the Wards, Villages and settlements in the towns and cities. Churches, but must know the policy directives and not to misinform targeted community members, misinterpreting the Bible and involving Church politics in this very serious social issue in the country. Government agencies such as Narcotic Bureau, National Youth Development Authority, Censorship Board, Welfare Services, National Volunteer Services, Police Family & Sexual Violence Unit, Counselling Services must work together to address this issue. Local NGO’s, National NGOs and Partners like Outreach International PNG, Ginigoada, PHI, PSI, and many others already work with people. Such Government arrangements must recognize these organizations efforts in the communities to reduce and strengthen family units facing such problems.
