THE annual National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop Cup rugby league competition was launched on Tuesday by the coordinating chairman Billy Aki and two-time cup winner, the Freeway Bumpers.

The competition will run from December 21-25. Aki said 32 teams from the suburbs would compete for the Governor’s Cup. He said the representative players – Digicel Cup, Hunters, Kumuls – would be barred from taking part making the cup all about the upcoming talent.

“My intention in this Governor’s Cup competition is develop raw talent in the suburbs and that’s why we can’t allow players who have already played at the top level to get involved here.” Aki said he was hoping to bring a team from the NCD Suburban competition into the Digicel Cup. The team would be called the NCD Suburban Lagatois.

He had explained that the 32 teams will be pooled into eight pools and the top team from each pool would then play each other in trials. “These eight teams will then play each other and a squad would be picked from those eight sides.”

Aki said the period for the 32 teams to register for the Governors Cup was from December 15-19.

The registration fee has increased from K300 to K500.

Aki invited women’s teams to register for them to run a parallel competition as well.
