EASTERN Highlands Governor Julie Soso has acknowledged private tertiary institutions for helping in absorbing the high number of students that the public institutions could not cater for.

She said there has been an influx of enrolment resulting in high number Grade 12 competing for limited space due to the free education policy.

“I thank the private education institutions such as International Training Institute,” she said.

“In Eastern Highlands, we brought ITI up to open up a facility for some of our school leavers to enrol with ITI.”

She highlighted the need for more colleges and universities to be created to cater for our school leavers from Grade 12.

“We have the business college there (Goroka) and we have the University of Goroka there but the six or seven university in Papua New Guinea is not enough,” she said.

“To build classrooms is my priority as governor and when we build classroom and we cater for our children, we also have to take care of teachers’ houses.

“What we are given in the function grant for education alone cannot cater for all the need we have in the province, education wise.”

She said with the help of PSIP fund there were a lot of educational infrastructure built in the eight districts of the province.
