DAME Carol Kidu is being praised for pulling out of the Somare camp and offering herself to be the leader of the opposition.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop congratulated the only woman parliamentarian, saying her decision was a challenge taken boldly during a time when Papua New Guinea politics was subjected to much stress and anxiety.
“I welcomed the announcement of our local MP Dame Carol to take up the reign of the office of the opposition,” he said yesterday.
“Her decision to abandon the Somare camp and put the interest of the nation ahead of her allegiance and respect for Grand Chief Sir Michael is commendable and welcomed.
“It is a mature and wise decision and I am confident her people will welcome that.”
Parkop said it was important that the office of the leader of opposition was occupied so a constructive scrutiny of the executive government continued until a new government was formed in August.
Henry Warkia, a community leader in Reimber-Livuan LLG in East New Britain, praised Dame Carol and challenged other leaders to follow her example.
“Her leadership and contribution to the growth of PNG is appreciated,” he said.
“As an ordinary villager, I thank her for her fearless stand on many issues on the floor of parliament.
“It is a challenge for other leaders to take; to consider pulling out of other political parties in pursuit of money and power and listen to the struggles of the people.”
