EMBARKING on tourism will bring economic stability to the provinces and the country while allowing people to preserve their cultural practices, Morobe Governor Luther Wenge says.
Wenge said promoting PNG’s unique Melanesian culture was the only way to make the country stand out in the international community.
“The only way to bring more tourism in is to reduce law and order issues,” he said.
“Engage younger generations in the tourism sectors and other sectors to reduce violence.”
Wenge said that the country is made up of different tribes, languages, traditions and land scapes and called on citizens to preserve them.
“PNG is blessed with non-renewable and renewable resources, so know the purpose of our environment rather than trading it for money,” he said.
“The PNG way is very precious, and it defines us.”
Wenge urged the people to appreciate and maintain the PNG ways and promote them in a way that can bring economic stability throughout the country.
He made the statement after a community in the Water Loo area of Kamkumung, Lae, Morobe, took the initiative to form and launched an eco-tourism association. According to organiser, Francis Steven, the association expected to over 3,000 tourists over the next month who would be in the province visiting the 10 districts.
Steven said they had appointed tour guides from the districts that would be in charge of assisting the tourists at the different locations in each district.
He said the plan was to revive tourism in Morobe.
