GULF Governor Havila Kavo told his people to be proud of their identity and celebrate as they were the ones who built Port Moresby and Papua New Guinea.

Speaking at the third University of PNG Gulf Day celebrations last Saturday at the Sir John Guise Stadium, Kavo told a big crowd overflowing onto the field outside from the indoor complex: “Celebrate your identity, be proud of it, we made Port Moresby and PNG what it is today, we built the infrastructure of Papua New Guinea, we must be proud as a Gulf.

“When you go to every town in Papua New Guinea, you will always see a Kerema compound. Some had been there 30 to 40 years ago as plumbers, carpenters, kiaps, teachers and made the towns what it is today, so be proud.”

The day saw a number of Gulf artists, traditional dancers and arts and crafts.

The crowd was too big to control which led to the security opening the door to the public as Basil Greg and Robert Oeka set the tone, joined by the upcoming TST Fire Boys and OBM Crew with their popular “Meri Karama”. Plans are underway to host the next Gulf Day in Lae.
