HELA Governor Anderson Agiru urged his people and security forces in the resource endowed province to work together to build a “peaceful and harmonious society that is so conducive to socio-economic development and progress”.

Agiru was reviewing the annual security forces parade on Friday, November 1, when he made the call.

He declared that his government would commit resources to ensure that the current security forces manpower, comprising both military on callout duties at the gas and oil project sites and to secure major infrastructure construction sites and police personnel, including a mobile contingent, would remain in the province for this term of parliament at least.

He called for the security forces and the local population to iron out their differences where there has been a number of serious incidents.

“Forget the last two years,” he said.

“Let us move forward to build a peaceful and harmonious society that is so conducive to socio-economic development and progress.”

Agiru repeated his now familiar stance that he would never go in to stop or resolve a tribal conflict.

“With the resources we have we can move forward and establish ourselves as a model province,” he said.

“Only our attitudes stand in the way of that and I will not come down and resolve your tribal fights when I have more positive issues on my plate.”

He handed over K12 million for the upgrading and sealing of two roads in the Tari town area.

Again he urged the people to remove buildings and crops within the roads corridors. “You have been warned. Move the buildings and relocate elsewhere because when the construction team comes, we will remove them for you.”

Agiru handed out certificates of merit from the Police Commissioner, commending several policemen and women for outstanding police work and presented trophies to winners of Independence Day security forces sports events.
