WESTERN Highlands Governor Paias Wingti turned up early to be the first person to be vaccinated at Mt Hagen Hospital on Friday.
“I have no choice but to get vaccinated because that is the safest way to live in the Covid-19 pandemic,” Wingti said.
“All my brothers and sisters should follow me to receive the vaccine because the Covid-19 health threat is real.”He urged all Papua New Guineans aged 18 and above to get their vaccine to stay safe and avoid being infected.
Wingti said everyone should ignore and not believe in the rumours and mistruths being spread on social media about the vaccine.
“The scientific evidence is clear, if you are vaccinated, you will not get seriously ill or die from the Covid-19,” he said.
After several minutes of observation, Wingti left the hospital and said he was feeling good.
He said getting vaccinated should be a priority for everyone because the Covid-19 was affecting so many lives worldwide.
Meanwhile, hospital staff said the Delta strain of the Covid-19 was spreading in more than 90 countries, including Australia, Indonesia and Fiji, adding that it was a far more infectious type of the virus.
In Fiji, 791 new cases were reported but a month ago, there were only 41 new cases.
