THE 2019 Maborasa Festival in Madang was launched by traditional singsing groups from the province’s six districts.
Madang Governor Peter Yama, who launched the festival, urged people to embrace their culture and have pride in showcasing their traditional song and dance.
He said the theme of the festival was “protecting my culture, my people, my environment” meaning Madang’s culture needed to be protected, preserved and practised by all generations.
“Madang has natural resources, culture and people and one way of uniting our people is by hosting the Maborasa show,” Yama said.
The launch saw children from Balek village in Madang district perform a traditional singsing telling the story of a young man seeking his future wife.
Yama urged leaders from the province’s six electorates to work with his administration in developing their districts and serving their people.
“None of the six MPs come and visit me or discuss issues affecting their districts with me. I only see them in Parliament and on Facebook.”
He said in events such as the Maborasa festival all Madang MPs needed to stand together to support and strengthen their people’s culture. Yama also took the opportunity to reveal a number of projects and government services he had funded for the districts.
Among them were 10 police houses for the Bundi local level government, classrooms for Rai Coast High School and developments at the Aiome government station and Josephstaal area.
