MOROBE Governor Luther Wenge plans to secure land in Markham for a new solar farm to supplement power into the Ramu grid.
It follows Australia’s plan to support the solar farm project for the province.
Australian Consul-General Mark Fox during the Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry business breakfast last week said the farm, under the Australian Laitim Aushold programme, was expected to bring 600 additional homes onto the power grid
“Through the Australian infrastructure financing facility for the Pacific, we are committed to delivering this new solar farm in Markham valley,” he said.
“This will be additional power to the Ramu grid and greatly stabilise power supply into Lae city and Morobe.
“We are ready to proceed as soon as PNG Power Limited agrees to secure us land.
“We’ll be working in partnership with the power sector development project to help more Lae citizens access power.
“This contribution will connect an additional 600 households in Morobe onto the power grid – many of them, for the first time.”
Wenge said reliable power was a big problem for business and social service.
“You (Australia) have helped us in so many ways and we are truly indebted to you,” he said.
